Monarch Butterfly Facts

The bright orange wings of the Monarch butterfly with the strong black markings are a common and beloved sight in North America. Monarch Butterflies (scientific name, Danaus plexippus) are the only North American butterfly known to make seasonal migrations. This Feat is particularly amazing, considering that no single butterfly makes the entire round trip. Even without any migrating experience, these beautiful insects are so consistent that the return of the Monarchs in spring can often be predicted to the very day.

The monarch caterpillar spends its days dining on the leaves of the poisonous milkweed plant. The toxins from the milkweed make the monarch butterfly a very unpleasant meal. Animals trying to eat monarch butterflies end up getting very sick. This makes them very reluctant to attempt to snack on monarch butterflies again. The nonpoisonous North American Viceroy butterfly takes advantage of this fact. Because its coloring is very similar to the monarch, animals avoid eating it as well.
