Lacewing Butterfly Yard Ornaments

Mostly found in tropical climes, members of the genus Cethosia are known as lacewings because of the distinctive lacey edges of the wings. They also frequently have intricate markings on the underside of their wings, adding to the lace-like effect.

Another inspiration for this beautiful design, was the Admiral butterflies of North America. A number of unrelated butterflies are called admirals. What they mostly seem to have in common is an impressive wingspan and showy markings. These features make them favorite garden visitors.

Red Admirals are quite common, although they cannot survive cold winters, and so new butterflies must re-colonize northern climates from the south every spring. They prefer moist forests, parks and wetlands, and subsist on an eclectic range of foodstuffs, from sap to fermenting fruit and even bird-droppings. Nectar is a food of last resort for these bold and fearless insects.
