Swallowtail Butterfly Garden Ornaments

The elongated wings of the Swallowtail Butterfly make an elegant and easily recognizable outline. Made from sturdy, low maitenence acrylic, and painted with sparkling uv resistant paints, this is our largest butterfly decoration, with a wingspan of 22 inches. If you don't want quite that large a lawn ornament, we offer a smaller, 14.5 inch, version as well.

Swallowtail Butterfly Facts

The swallowtail family of butterflies have tail extensions on their hind wings. These are to trick predators into thinking that they are antenna, thus mistaking the hind end for the front. When they swoop hungrily for the butterfly's head, they sometimes end up with only a mouthful of wing tail, and the butterfly, although damaged, survives.

The Swallowtail family (Papilionidae) includes the Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor philenor) the Zebra Swallowtail (Eurytides marcellus), the Black Swallowtail (Papilio ployxenes asterius), the Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus glaucus), the Spicebrush Swallowtail (Papilio troilus troilus) and the Giant Swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes.)
